A Look Into the Popular Linux Desktop Environments – GNOME and KDE

KDE
von palazio

Linux, as a versatile operating system, allows numerous users to work under a single administration. It has enhanced security and is quite dynamic in its performance. The desktop environment is a conjugation of the more familiar graphical user interface or GUI with the Linux operating system. The basic environment that is used at systems running on Linux is KDE and Gnome.

The choice of desktop environments and their utilities vary from user to user. However the capability of the KDE and Gnome environments are quite similar. Unlike other commercial operating systems most of the Linux OS developers distribute it for free. It has hence a wide range of scope and is customizable due to which they are also fine-tuned according to the usage pattern.

The Graphical User Interface or GUI has now become an absolutely necessity for Linux users although previously, Linux was mainly based and operated through the Unix command line.

The operating commands had to be executed from the terminal, due to which it was considered to be an operating system for the computer engineers and researchers only. However, with the coming of popular environments of Linux like Gnome and KDE, the usability of Linux has enhanced exponentially. These environments support features of using multiple desktop screens on one terminal and several other choices which can be used to customize the look of your system.

However there are some basic similarities between all desktop environments of Linux as they interact to the underlying core operating system through similar methods. This is why people often confuse the OS with the environments and perhaps feel that it is the same as the OS. This is a completely wrong notion as the desktop environment is nothing but a graphical layer to the core Linux operating system.

There are certain software applications that come bundled with the different environments. While KDE bundles the Konqueror browser in its installation package, GNOME uses the more popular Mozilla Firefox. However, any of these applications can be installed separately which makes the operating system even more flexible.

GNOME is more widely used among the two desktop environments, mainly because KDE is considered to be difficult for people migrating from Windows. However, it is the simpler and smoother of the two. The choice of the environment completely lies with the user, as most Linux distributions provide a choice of options (mainly between GNOME and KDE) during the installation process.

A selection of the notebooks I have kept. Front and center is the one that rides around in my purse to collect thoughts and ideas, but there are personal journals, class notebooks, a work notebook, a home-maintenance log and an old Wiktionary notebook in here, too.

I can squeeze 2 notebooks, namecard holders, and many other items inside this notebook which other notebooks cant do so. For now, i have 2 notebooks inside, a Fieldnotes, and many namecards from various working partners. Its all about function.

*Updated – we’re back* download.opensuse.org celebrates May 1 holiday (it’s broken)

Update: download.opensuse.org is back up, OBS and mirrors are resyncing

After receiving a new disk array, and restoring backups onto it, download.opensuse.org is back up.  The openSUSE Build Service is currently syncing all its repos to it, and then a full mirror rescan will be carried out so that the latest software is on all the mirrors that download redirects to. The temporary redirection has been removed.  The outage is to be discussed at today’s openSUSE Project Meeting.

It’s going to be a quiet May 1 for openSUSE users and contributors, due to a rare two-disk failure on download.opensuse.org, the central site for accessing openSUSE distribution releases and packages.  To work-around the failure, temporarily change your repository URLs using YaST Software Repositories or zypper (or edit the files in /etc/zypp/repos.d) to a nearby mirror.  Normally, requests to download.opensuse.org are redirected automatically to a mirror by the Mirrorbrain software running there.  On Monday, the disk hardware on download failed beyond the level its redundancy is designed to handle.  We are working to restore the system as soon as possible, and will post updates as soon as we have more information.

Beste Antwort:
